The climate in Zermatt Switzerland is mild in the sense that there are no huge fluctuations in temperature, there is little risk of disastrous weather, and extreme temperatures in either direction are somewhat out of the ordinary. That is not to say that there are not particularly cold and particularly warm days, because to be sure there is, but for the most part you are not going to see extremely hot days in the summer or temperatures that are way below freezing during the winter. And this makes Zermatt Switzerland the perfect place to visit in any season.

While Zermatt’s climate is considered arctic, it is important to remember that there are still four differentiated seasons. You will not find any tropical weather in Zermatt, to be sure, but you will definitely find days warm enough to sit and relax beside one of the town’s spectacular lakes. A brief overview of the seasonal temperatures will help you better prepare for your trip to Zermatt, so that you can enjoy all that the town has to offer to the fullest.

Being the mountain town that it is, it is quite obvious that there will be snow in Zermatt during the winter, and in a few areas even during other times of the year. The coldest months of the year, much like in many other places, are December, January, February, and March. During these months the highs tend to hover in the mid-thirties (Fahrenheit), and the lows are often as low as the teens. For most of the winter season it is plenty cold enough to snow, which surely the winter sport enthusiasts who visit are grateful for. Surprisingly, though, this is not the season with the most precipitation, even though it still does see a significant amount.

Springs in Zermatt are only slightly warmer than the winter months, with highs reaching a little higher, but lows still staying well below freezing on most days in early spring. The end of spring is a wonderful time to visit Zermatt, though, as the fields and prairies filled with beautiful flowers and the fresh air that you get to breath are something you will not find in many places. Early in the spring though, you might still see temperatures in the mid-twenties, but toward the end of spring you may see temperatures as high as 60 degrees.

Fall is full of color like many other places, but the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the Matterhorn, and the traditional Swiss architecture simply makes it all the more amazing. And in some cases, you may even visit during the fall in see temperatures in the 60’s. Whatever kind of fall you experience in Zermatt, you will be glad you had the opportunity.
