Skiing from Mont Blanc in Chamonix to the Matterhorn in Zermatt – The Haute Route

For those individuals that love skiing there are certain places that they dream of someday seeing.  Both Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France and the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland are places that are on the lists of many a skiers.  And nothing could be better than being able to ski both of them in the same trip, which many avid skiers do.  They call it, among circles of adventurers, the Haute Route.  Although there are numerous variations of the Haute Route, skiers and hikers can get from Mont Blanc in France to the Matterhorn in Switzerland in a matter of just days.  The route was first taken in the mid-19th century and since has been traveled many times by hikers and ski aficionados.

Today when adventurers come to conquer the Haute Route it is a little different than it used to be.  For one, there are plenty of places to stop off to stay at along the way, most often in the form of huts that are a sight to see alone.  There are also plenty of villages that have popped up along the way, and regardless of which variation of the route you decide to take you will find someplace to eat and stay.  Each of the routes that you have the option of taking will have you out on the slopes for about 6-7 days.  These villages will be important in keeping yourself nourished and going.

As well as the villages you will want to take the time to stop off and see during your Haute Route ski, there are a number of natural sights that you will want to enjoy along the way.  Certain vantage points that offer a special view and certain spots in which you’ll find nature especially untouched by anything else.  These are what make the Haute Route so special.  And what better way to end such a special trip than a stay in Zermatt, at the base of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt is a small, quaint little town, with plenty of wonderful restaurants and beautiful scenery.  There are numerous first-class Zermatt hotels to choose from, depending on what kind of experience you are looking for.  And any one of them makes for a great way to end your Haute Route ski trip.  Your stay will surely be almost as memorable as your ski trip when you end it in Zermatt with a view of the Matterhorn.
