The climate in Zermatt Switzerland is mild in the sense that there are no huge fluctuations in temperature, there is little risk of disastrous weather, and extreme temperatures in either direction are somewhat out of the ordinary. That is not to say that there are not particularly cold and particularly warm days, because to be sure there is, but for the most part you are not going to see extremely hot days in the summer or temperatures that are way below freezing during the winter. And this makes Zermatt Switzerland the perfect place to visit in any season.

While Zermatt's climate is considered arctic, it is important to remember that there are still four differentiated seasons. You will not find any tropical weather in Zermatt, to be sure, but you will definitely find days warm enough to sit and relax beside one of the town's spectacular lakes. Winter Climate in Zermatt

Being the mountain town that it is, it is quite obvious that there will be snow in Zermatt during the winter, and in a few areas even during other times of the year. The coldest months of the year, much like in many other places, are December, January, February, and March. During these months the highs tend to hover in the mid-thirties (Fahrenheit), and the lows are often as low as the teens. For most of the winter season it is plenty cold enough to snow, which surely the winter sport enthusiasts who visit are grateful for. Surprisingly, though, this is not the season with the most precipitation, even though it still does see a significant amount.

Spring Climate in Zermatt

Springs in Zermatt are only slightly warmer than the winter months, with highs reaching a little higher, but lows still staying well below freezing on most days in early spring. The end of spring is a wonderful time to visit Zermatt, though, as the fields and prairies filled with beautiful flowers and the fresh air that you get to breath are something you will not find in many places. Early in the spring though, you might still see temperatures in the mid-twenties, but toward the end of spring you may see temperatures as high as 60 degrees.

Summer Climate in Zermatt

Summers in Zermatt may not be ideal for beach lovers, but they are spectacular to those that love a different side of nature and a different kind of natural scenery. The greenery seems to come alive in the town during the summer months, with amazing sights throughout the air that are well worth seeing. Visitors who love nature can completely occupy their entire time in Zermatt by walking around to see the scenery, and the temperatures make it all the more enjoyable. Rarely do temperatures in Zermatt reach higher than 70, and most times they hover in about the mid-sixties. This is about as mild as a summer can get, which is why Zermatt is visited by so many during these months.

Fall Climate in Zermatt

Finally, it must be pointed out that while fall tends to be pretty chilly in Zermatt, it is a great time to visit, if for nothing else then simply for the amazing scenery. Temperatures do often get down as low as the thirties, but it is a small price to pay for what you get to see when you visit during this season. Fall is full of color like many other places, but the backdrop of the Swiss Alps, the Matterhorn, and the traditional Swiss architecture simply makes it all the more amazing. And in some cases, you may even visit during the fall in see temperatures in the 60's. Whatever kind of fall you experience in Zermatt, you will be glad you had the opportunity.

The weather in Zermatt may not be exactly mild, but one thing that it also is not is unpredictable. Knowing what to expect you can enjoy your time in Zermatt even more, and it doesn't matter during which season you end up visiting.
